Confidence Lost in a Breath

I just witnessed something tonight that was profoundly disillusioning and as a University of Chicago student and a huge supporter of all things Chicago I feel I owe Rebecca Jarvis a post. I watch The Apprentice but this season I watched avidly as University of Chicago alumni Rebecca Jarvis showed her strength, resilience, loyalty, and integrity. As I watched the finale I thought Trump would pick both of the candidates, as clearly both had demonstrated their abilities. But when Trump asked Randall if he should hire Rebecca on as well and Randall, in one sentence went against everything he had cultivated by saying that no he should not hire Rebecca, I was simply aghast. For an entire season he had talked about his loyalty, his good faith in Rebecca, his belief in his teammates and at the last minute to snuff it all out by back stabbing Rebecca when he could have easily said bring her on Trump and shown that he had good graces and loyalty he said no. Shame on you Randall. That shows you are no different from any other prestige hunting consultant and smarmy business man out there that only cares for his own advantage. All of the respect I had for you through the entire season was snuffed out in ten seconds. I had hopes that you were a man of integrity and loyalty like Rebecca but I was wrong. As a fellow University of Chicago alumni I put my full support behind Rebecca. For a 24 year old she showed amazing toughness and tenacity. Randall, let me say that having her come on board with you after Trump had said you were hired would have only required a word from you and would have only added to my respect for you. Instead I have lost it. Rather than adding to the prestige of becoming The Apprentice I see you now as someone who only cares about the image and not the substance. Rebecca is better off without you and your false image. You could have had full respect and given opportunity to a young woman of tremendous talent. You would have lost nothing by it. But now you have lost everything in my eyes. Shame on you.

Thanks for leaving me a comment….Ugh, im so pissy over this…Randell’s position should be taken away for being such a selfish fake…Everyone knows he’s “THE Apprentice”…..giving Rebecca the job would have been the bigger, better person-thing to do…It wouldn’t have affected him at all…Mr. Trump made a big mistake. Education weighs nothing compared to the type of person you are; and everyone swore he was such a nice guy! Randell is exactly the type of business person everyone hates; a big fake.

  2. Yeah, hmmmm….what if Trump had called *her* name first? I’m feeling confident that our buddy Randall might have felt differently. Ya think?

  3. Julie says:

Rebecca would have brought him on! She has loyality and integrity! Shame on Randall! SHAME!

I love your line “Rather than adding to the prestige of becoming The Apprentice I see you now as someone who only cares about the image and not the substance.” just thought I’d show some love back for you posting on my site. Very solid points. I disagree with a few, but I completely see where you’re coming from.

Randall did the right thing. Because The Apprentice is a television show, he could have assumed that Mr. Trump would have given the crown to Rebecca, especially since the show always has one winner.

Besides, if NBC (who really chooses the Apprentice) really was going to hire both finalists, they would have done it.

Also, I believe that it would have been easier for Randall to make the politically correct choice of saying he would hire Rebecca, but how many people would go on a job interview and ask for their main competitor to get hired as well?

  6. Julie says:

Randall did not do the right thing. It was clear Trump was giving Randall as the winner the chance to be a bigger man and bring another talented person into what is now his new home. I doubt NBC does the hiring, Trump wouldn’t let them have that much control. I am sure they have quite a say but not that much

And frankly if I already had the job and knew my main competitor could add to the organization I just joined than damn straight I would bring her in.

    Thanks for the comment Julie.

This will be such a HUGE media buzz tomorrow! Randal has some explaining to do for sure.

  8. We support the individuals we choose to support because of how they behave and who they represent. Rebecca represents women, she represents the University of Chicago, she represents her hometown….etc.

This is one of the reasons the show works so well. Because while the show is about individuals, viewers are able to vibe with the individuals because of something much larger than their individual characters.

Along those lines, if Randall would’ve agreed to bring Rebecca along–something that had never been done before, something that no previous contestant was required or asked to do–he would have violated the thing that endeared him to the audience HE represents. Whether that audience is African American, MIT alum, former Rhode Scholars, or PhDs.

What a crock of hogwash. Three previous Apprentice shows and it is “winner take all” and now you want change it to “let’s share.” It was a friggin competition, to select the best, notice I did not say two best, or one best and a second best that also gets a job. Is there a Super Bowl winner or are there co-winners? I hire the best candidate for the job, not the best candidate and the other applicant waiting in the lobby.

I lost any respect I had for Randall. For being such an educated man, Randall didn’t read the situation very well. When Trump asked him if he thought that Rebecca should be hired also, he obviously wanted to hire her. I do think that Trump should have just went and hired Rebecca as well, but he was not expecting Randall to respond the way he did. But when he got the response he did, he wasn’t in a position to say, “Oh well, I’m hiring her anyway.” That would have looked strange.

I really hope that Trump will hire Rebecca anyway. They each wanted to work on different projects, so he would have two more wonderful executives. Although if I were to make predictions, I would say that Randall won’t go far in the Trump Organization. Rebecca, on the other hand, I think will go very far. Loyalty speaks volumes. Even though Trump questioned her loyalty to Toral, at great risk to herself she refused to bring Toral into the Boardroom with her. Trump respects that. Randall on the other hand, showed his true colors, and demonstrated that education doesn’t equate to common sense. THE BONEHEAD DIDN’T CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST!!!

  12. If Trump wanted to hire her, why didn’t he?

Reality shows manipulate our emotions as a general rule. They don’t work otherwise.

    But here?

The person you all should have beef with is Trump, for not choosing the person you all wanted as the winner.

Randall? On paper he was the best candidate from the beginning. But more importantly, in PERFORMANCE he was the best candidate, and the most ethical. From Randall’s perspective every other show had only one winner, and Trump was the one to CHOOSE who that winner was. I would consider it a slap in the face if I was selected as the winner, and then have the judge put the onus on ME to choose a co-winner, flying in the face of the rules, and my performance.

You want Rebecca, Trump? Choose her YOURSELF.

The question that interests me is…why aren’t you all mad at Trump?

  13. Chalicechick says:

Because my position is still that Trump asked an essentially rhetorical question and Randall was dumb enough to answer it.

It was pretty obvious throughout the show what Trumpy intended. Randall either didn’t pick up on it or didn’t care.

  14. Pete G says:

    two words: Randall sucks!

  15. Chris says:

I’d make a bet that five years from now, Randall will not be working for Trump, and Rebecca will be a quickly rising star in the Trump organization. What do you all think?

  16. andrea says:

So all the loyalty talk from Randall was a sham! He could have made it distincly clear and said, “sure I’d love to haev Rebecca as my right hand man”. Then he would still remai the clear winner and a loyal person. Good people are hard to find and when you find them, you hang on to them. In Rebel Billionaire, the winner got to hire an assistant. He was still the winner either way.

Randall’s atitude was very representive of society. Competition is a very Western idea. He was clinging onto the idea of “status”. I din’t like his response, it was so ego-driven.

  17. Kevin says:

Donald Trump made an excellent decision when he hired Randal. Likewise, Randal made an EXCELLENT decision by not supporting Rebecca’s hiring. Randal should not be forced to share the title of Apprentice with anyone, let alone Rebecca. No one in Apprentice history has every come close to what Randal has to offer and Rebecca, while extremely talented and strong, is no exception. I find it appalling that people like you have the audacity to suggest that Randal should have made any other choice, especially since we have no idea that his choice would have affected Trump. Trump did not overrule Randal’s opinion because once again Randal made a great decision and Trump recognized it for what it was. If Trump really wanted Rebecca he would have hired her and not asked Randall. This is after all the man who fired 4 people at once. He does not need anyone’s permission to do anything on that show.

The real question is, what kind of person would Rebecca be if she became Apprentice #5b by default/sympathy (she clearly was second choice)? There can only be one #1. If Rebecca was a true talent she would not want or need a handout. She should have done better so that she won Apprentice fair and square.

No one asked any of the white males or the white female to share the title of Apprentice, and their runner-ups where more closely matched. But when the African-American wins, people like you want him to share the lime light with the white runner-up. Is this 2005? As an Asian-American, I am not surprised, but I am disappointed. How can you or anyone else condemn Randal for his decision? He showed throughout this game that he is a man of integrity and to say that he lost his integrity because he wants to be the sole Apprentice and not share the title is ridiculous. Did anyone expect Bill to share with Kwame on season 1? No they did not and those two were at least somewhat equally skilled. Bill was not all the more exceptional over Kwame. But you expect Randal, the Rhodes Scholar, to share with Rebecca. Give me a break! I just hope that Randal does not take any of this crap to heart and that he knows that there are people out there (many of whom are his fellow contestants who shook their heads “no” when Trump proposed hiring Rebecca or did you not notice that?) who support/agree with his decision 100%. He is not selfish and this standup guy deserves some support and praise for his excellent work on the show. This is supposed to be his time to shine, not be berated. You can’t even give him that. Instead you try to take away from him what is rightfully his — a time to bask in his win and be applauded for a job well done on all 13 weeks. He does not deserve comments like yours.

  18. Chris says:

The Apprentice 4’s website poll has 60% for Rebecca being hired, and 40% for Randall. I think that Randall deserved to be in the final two, but that Randall was a clear winner, is overstretching a little.

True, Trump never asked any of the previous winners whether the other should be hired also. That suggests to me that he wanted to hire Rebecca as well. I do agree that Trump should have hired Rebecca also without asking Randall. But he expected that Randall was going to recognize a win/win situation when he saw it.

Why would Trump ask in the first place if he had no intention of hiring Rebecca. If Randall had said yes, was Trump going to say, “Well, I am not going to hire her.” That would have made him look like an ass.

Why is it that race has to be bought up here? Can’t it just be that Kwame (and all other runner-ups )would not make a good team with the winners, and so Trump never asked the winners. Look at what he and Rebecca did when they teamed up on tasks. They were a team to be reckoned with (ie: getting their hands on the other team’s megaphones).
