There are few moments more comforting than spending time chatting with like minded young fashion entrepreneurs. It reminds you that you are not alone, that you are not crazy, and that no your industry isn’t filled with bitchy status obsessed gossip mongers (those are just the ones you hear about).
Yesterday in what could have been a simple market appointment and designer interview turned into an amazing everything under the sun conversation with two women Kate D’Arcy of Toggery and Janna Meyrowitz of Style House PR, who not only own their own businesses in fashion but are doing it at ages 26 and 24 and kicking ass. We talked about making the leap into the unknown, finding good help, and a million and one topics I don’t even remember. When I left the On the Verge showroom two and a half hours later it didn’t even feel like that much time had elapsed. It made me realize that whether you are in public relations, design or editorial we all face a lot of the same challenges.
I hear you about feeling alone and somewhat insane…a lot of times I feel like really, there is no point and shouldn’t I be doing something more socially and ethically conscious and why am I promoting the consumerist mindset that I’ve critiqued so often, and why oh why do I feel that a place in the fashion industry requires a bitchy snarky attitude and a large designer handbag?
It’s really really nice to have a sincere talk with people who are at a similar stage in the game as you are, and who can really understand the disillusionment that we so often feel.
